The Peasant Evolution Producers' Co-Operative

Meat

Many of the smallholdings in our co-operative have animals as part of sustainable mixed farming systems. Some farms are certified organic, others follow natural free-range farming methods. Contact us about the availability of different sorts of meat which will be available at different times of the year.

Pork

Pigs at Fivepenny Farm

Pigs at Fivepenny Farm

Most of the pork is reared at Brig’s Farm (free range), Fivepenny Farm or Liberty Farm (Organic Farmers & Growers certified organic). They are fed on a diet of local beans, triticale and wheat supplemented with waste vegetables from the farm. No soya is used because we do not believe it is environmentally sustainable. All are free range rare breed animals.

Our lamb is reared at Blackthorn Farm, by Christopher and Janie at Tempest House or Fivepenny Farm. All of the animals are free-range and grass fed. Often we kill the lambs as hogget at a year and a half old which makes for a more flavourful but still tender meat. We often have chrome-free sheepskin rugs available from Welsh Black or Jacobs sheep on our crafts page. Please join the mailing list for details of when fresh lamb is available.

Occasionally some of the smallholdings have meat chickens available. The meat chickens raised by co-operative members are always free-range or organic and fed a diet of non-GM local grains. Please join the mailing list for details of when meat chickens are available.

Geese

Ele at Fivepenny Farm raises geese. Here’s what she has to say about them:
“Hi, my name’s Ele Saltmarsh. I’m thirteen years old and one of my hobbies is raising geese and chickens. I raise my geese in a traditional style, keeping them outside but shutting them in at night to protect them from foxes. They are fed only on all grain and grass, which gives them a delicious flavour (especially when slow roasted). I sell them at Christmas time for £10/kilo- which usually ends up at £30-£45. Please contact me if you are interested as early as possible, so I know how many goslings to get. Thanks!”
